A Quick Lay of the Land
Cyprus is like the juicy cherry on top of the Mediterranean, chilling out in the eastern part of the sea. It cozies up southeast of Greece, south of Turkey, west of Syria and Lebanon, northwest of Israel and Palestine, and takes up a position north of Egypt. Checking Out the South Side
The Republic of Cyprus runs the southern chunk of the island. Glance south over the Mediterranean, and there’s Egypt sitting further down the map—though they’re neighbors with plenty of saltwater between them. Inside Cyprus, a line known as the United Nations Buffer Zone marks the divide between the Republic of Cyprus in the south and the self-named Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus up north.

Over yonder to the east, Lebanon, Syria, and Israel make their presence known across the Mediterranean. These folks are key players when you consider Cyprus’s political and money-making connections.
Castin’ Eyes Northwest
Look northwest from Cyprus, and all you see is the big blue until you hit Turkey. Turkey’s proximity makes it a big deal in the mixing pot of politics around here. Also, with Cyprus northwest of Israel, it shows off its spot as a major player in the area.
Northern Scene
Up in the north, the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus claims its stake, though Turkey’s the only one giving it a high-five. The UN’s Buffer Zone wedges itself here too, keeping the northern and southern parts apart. This setup paints a picture of the tricky political scene in Cyprus.
Out West
Head west, and it’s still just the Mediterranean doing its thing, spotlighting Cyprus’s nautical chops. The Republic of Cyprus looks after the southern side, and the Buffer Zone along with northern territory sketches out the western edges.
